Dr. Albert Caruana is a highly accomplished and compassionate ophthalmologist dedicated to providing exceptional eye care to the Fort Lauderdale community. Born and raised in Hollywood, Florida, Dr. Caruana has deep roots in South Florida, where his parents ran a legal practice that served the Miami-Dade community for many years.
Dr. Caruana’s journey into medicine began with a solid academic foundation. After graduating from the University School in Davie, Florida, he attended Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, where he majored in Biology and minored in Classical Studies. He went on to earn his medical degree at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas, on a prestigious scholarship.
During his medical training, Dr. Caruana discovered his passion for ophthalmology while caring for a trauma patient in the Surgical Emergency Room. This pivotal experience inspired him to pursue the field, and an elective rotation in ophthalmology confirmed his desire to specialize in preserving and restoring vision.
Dr. Caruana completed his Ophthalmology Residency at the University of Maryland, where he gained extensive training in medical and surgical eye care. To further refine his skills, he pursued a fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern. This advanced training equipped him with expertise in cutting-edge technologies for cataract and refractive surgery, as well as the management of complex corneal diseases.
In 2008, Dr. Caruana returned to his hometown of Fort Lauderdale to join the Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston. His practice quickly flourished, and he was soon appointed Department Chair of Ophthalmology. In 2014, he transitioned to private practice, joining Eye Surgery Associates in Hollywood, Florida. Over the next decade, Dr. Caruana built a thriving practice, earning a reputation for his precision, expertise, and commitment to patient-centered care.
In 2025, Dr. Caruana fulfilled a lifelong dream by founding Caruana Eye Care with his husband, Justin Caruana. His vision is to create a welcoming, patient-friendly environment where state-of-the-art technology and compassionate care converge. Specializing in advanced technology cataract surgery, refractive surgery, and the treatment of corneal diseases, Dr. Caruana is committed to helping patients achieve their best possible vision. Outside of work, Dr. Caruana is man of many interests who cherishes the vibrant culture and natural beauty of South Florida. His wide range of personal interests includes cooking, and exploring diverse cuisines. Dr. Caruana is also passionate about travel, immersing himself in different cultures and discovering new perspectives. In his downtime, he enjoys playing guitar, diving into video games, and expressing his creativity through crafting detailed costumes and cosplay. These hobbies reflect his well-rounded personality and his ability to connect with people on a personal level, making each patient interaction warm and genuine.
